Sylvain Gaudreault has a bachelor’s degree in law and in history. In 1996, he became a member of the Québec Bar and did a master’s degree in regional studies and intervention at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi.
In the late 1990s, he led the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi’s Association des diplômés et amis then the Fondation des parlementaires québécois Cultures à partager. He went on to teach history and media arts and technology at the Cégep de Jonquière, where he also served as an academic advisor. From 2002 to 2005, he wrote a regular column on public affairs in the newspaper Le Quotidien.
At the same time as he was pursuing these professional activities, Mr. Gaudreault applied his personal skills and qualities to the boards of directors of several organizations such as the Centre historique des Sœurs de Notre-Dame du Bon-Conseil, the Société historique du Saguenay, Justice alternative Saguenay, and the Conseil régional de la culture. He chaired the board of the Fondation des parlementaires québécois Cultures à partager, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean section, for four years.
Sylvain Gaudreault has been Member of the National Assembly in the riding of Jonquière since the March 2007 general election. During his terms in office, he served on several commissions and as Official Opposition critic, specifically in the areas of energy, youth, elementary and secondary education, and literacy.
