In 1970, his undergraduate degree in education from Université de Sherbrooke in hand, Yvon Vallières headed into the classroom, but no sooner had his career as a teacher (1970-1972) and education consultant (1972-1973) begun than he heard the call of politics.
Yvon Vallières has had a seat in the National Assembly since 1973, with the exception of one defeat, in the general elections of 1976, when he returned to teaching and obtained a certificate in the psychology of human relations from Université de Sherbrooke (1981). His parliamentary experience is enviable. He is now in his ninth term of office and has more than 33 years of service as the MNA for the electoral division of Richmond.
Yvon Vallières was Minister for Transport (October 1989 to October 1990), Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (October 1990 to January 1994), and Minister for Regional Development (October 1990 to February 1992). He would return to the Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation, this time as Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food from February 2005 to April 2007.
Mr. Vallières has had a number of important parliamentary functions, including three-time Chief Government Whip (December 1985 to October 1989; February to July 1994; and April 2003 to February 2005). He chaired the Government Caucus from April 2007 to November 2008. On January 13, 2009, he become President of the National Assembly, and remained so until April 1, 2011.
On September 7, 2011, the Premier named Yvon Vallières Minister responsible for Canadian Intergovernmental Affairs and the Canadian Francophonie and Minister responsible for the Reform of Democratic Institutions and Access to Information.
Mr. Vallières was made Commander of the Ordre de la Pléiade in 2007 and was the recipient of the Grand Croix in 2009.
