Rita Lc de Santis

  • Minister responsible for Access to Information and the Reform of Democratic Institutions

Rita Lc de Santis is a lawyer born in Italy on May 29, 1954, in Palmoli, a municipality located in the province of Chieti, in the Abruzzes region. In December 1958, at the age of 4, she stepped off the Italian ship Vulcania in Halifax, Nova Scotia, with her parents and brother. From there, the family moved to Montréal and settled in the Ville-Émard neighbourhood.

Rita de Santis attended Lasalle Catholic High School, and completed her college studies at Loyola College in Montréal. She graduated from McGill University with an Honours Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry in 1976, after which she pursued doctoral studies in biochemistry for one year at University of Toronto in 1977. In 1980, she obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree from McGill University. She passed the Québec Bar examination and was sworn in on November 11, 1981.

Prior to making the leap into politics, she practised law for over three decades, and became one of the first female partners at Phillips & Vineberg law firm in Montréal (today Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg), in February 1989. She has worked in the fields of real estate development, as well as corporate financing and acquisitions at national and international levels, focusing on mergers and acquisitions, real estate law, and project funding.

Rita Lc de Santis was first elected during Québec’s general election on September 4, 2012, in the Bourassa-Sauvé riding, in which she was also re-elected on April 7, 2014. From April 23, 2014, to January 28, 2016, she was the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister responsible for Government Administration and Ongoing Program Review (open and transparent government), as well as a member of the Committee on Public Finance and of the Committee on Public Administration. On January 28, 2016, she was sworn in as Minister responsible for Access to Information and the Reform of Democratic Institutions.
