François Blais

Place of birth: Saint-Patrice-de-Beaurivage

François Blais holds a bachelor’s degree in social service from Université Laval and a master’s degree and a PhD from the Université du Québec à Montréal. He engaged in postdoctoral studies at the Centre de recherche en droit public at the Université de Montréal and was subsequently hired as a professor in the political science department at Université Laval in 1992.

From 2003 to 2006, Dr. Blais served as director of the department, then from 2006 to 2014 as dean of the Faculté des sciences sociales at Université Laval, which has over 5 000 students in five departments and two schools.

He has been invited to speak in universities the world over on topics as varied as the history of political ideas, changes in income security policies, and economic and social ethics. Moreover, he has been involved in numerous organizations. In particular, he has served at Université Laval as chairman of the steering committee of the Chaire sur la démocratie et les institutions parlementaires, chairman of the steering committe of the Observatoire démographique et statistique de l’espace francophone and chairman of the Comité institutionnel sur la situation des étudiants autochtones. Moreover, he has sat on the boards of directors of a number of parapublic and community organizations.

François Blais was elected MNA for Charlesbourg riding on April 7, 2014 and was appointed Minister of Employment and Social Solidarity on April 23, 2014. He was Minster of Education, Higher Education and Research from February 27, 2015, to January 28, 2016, and then Minister of Employment and Social Solidarity, and Minister responsible for the Capitale-Nationale region. Since October 11, 2017, he has been Minister of Employment and Social Solidarity.
