The Québec government emphasizes the 21st National Aboriginal Day

Québec City, June 21, 2017 – The Québec government is pleased to highlight National Aboriginal Day. Minister responsible for Native Affairs Geoffrey Kelley is inviting the public to take part in the festivities and show their appreciation of the diversified and valuable contribution the Aboriginal peoples have made to Québec’s cultural identity.

Many activities will take place throughout Québec to highlight this unique event, which is a special occasion for Quebecers not only to share Native pride, but also to highlight the unique heritage of the First Peoples. It also gives them an opportunity to acknowledge and promote Québec’s cultural diversity.

National Aboriginal Day was announced in 1996 by the federal government. Since this proclamation, the day of the summer solstice, June 21st, has marked the celebration of the Aboriginal peoples of Québec and Canada.

“Let us take advantage of National Aboriginal Day to strengthen our ties, pay tribute to the Aboriginal peoples’ priceless contribution to our collective cultural heritage, and initiate a new dialogue that relies on the concrete contribution of each of our nations in order to build a more inclusive society that will lead Québec to embrace change.”

Philippe Couillard, Premier of Québec

“Openness and diversity are the hallmarks of this event, which reminds everyone each year of the territory that we all share and that each of the Aboriginal communities is for Québec a valuable partner. I am proud to take part in the activities taking place throughout the day and would like to invite Quebecers to participate in the festivities and take advantage of every opportunity available to better appreciate the cultural diversity of the Aboriginal nations.”

Geoffrey Kelley, Minister responsible for Native Affairs
